Teacher. Innovator. Mentor. Advocate. Trustee.

Why I’m Running for Area 4

For the last 10 years, I’ve served our community as a public school elementary and middle school teacher. For the last 5 years, I’ve served my local school district-the Oak Grove School District-as their twice-elected school board member. For the last 3 years, I’ve served our state as the President and CEO of the California Latino School Boards Association where I teach other school board members across our state on how to make change for their students.

My life’s purpose is public service, especially for the place and people where I call home: Santa Clara County. This is my home where I was born, raised, and educated, and there is nothing more important to me than making sure that our future generations of students HAVE a future. That is why I am asking for your support: let’s make Santa Clara County history and win a seat for our most vulnerable students whom I personally understand as an English learner and special education student myself. Serving on the Santa Clara County Board of Education means having the ability to make change that can impact the county’s 260,000+ students and 31 local school districts through the Santa Clara County Office of Education.

We need proven leadership. Leadership that understands student needs from our local school boards to our classrooms. Leadership that has led at the state-level. Leadership that can make Santa Clara County history by electing our county’s first Indigenous elected official and first LGBTQ+ trustee. The stakes are too high for anything less. Representation matters. Experience matters. Proven leadership matters. With your help, we will make Santa Clara County history and blaze a new path for change that will accelerate our students in achieving the American dream. Let’s make it happen together.

Meet Jorge

Jorge was born and raised in San Jose to two working-class parents who cleaned homes and built cars to support their family. His mother escaped the Salvadoran Civil War and his Maya-Korean father left his whole family and ancestral village in Mexico to give Jorge and his four sisters a chance for a better life. Despite nearly failing out of high school, Jorge went to community college and graduated from UC Berkeley—his family's first college graduate—and became a teacher to mentor kids who struggled in school just like him. Since 2018, he has been serving our community as your twice-elected local school board member at the Oak Grove School District making sure that no kid falls through the cracks like how he did. Now, he’s ready to serve ALL of our students as your next Santa Clara County Board of Education Trustee.
